Three sounds I know well:

the seagull’s cry,

the chapel bell,

and the friend’s voice at the door.

Three scents that remain,

an open book,

earth after rain,

and the south wind from the shore.

Berries

The fallen leaves lie deeper every day.

The branches grow more bare; the seasons turn.

Beside the path, the sea-cliff falls away;

the webs are threads of winter through the fern.

Behind the rusting fence, a bunch or two

of blackberries the birds have left behind,

forgotten in the briars as they grew;

the season can turn cold, but still be kind.

They let themselves be lifted from the stem

more freely than perhaps I thought they would,

as though the threat of frost had readied them

to stain warm fingertips, as berries should.

I spit the seeds out, hard and dark and live:

the bitter juice that lets the thorn-tree thrive.
